Mixed-use urban design projects in center cities are a complex undertaking. Numerous mixed-use developments are conceptualized each year, but few evolve into real projects and even fewer get finished. Such mega-scaled projects need pooling of resources from both public and private sectors. Hence, such projects are implemented with public/private partnerships and their successful accomplishment needs many things to fall in place. The public/private partnership has to be formed from the beginning of the project and should go till the end. "The Banks" project on Cincinnati riverfront was delayed because of various reasons. This book examines its implementation focusing on public/private partnership, compares it to other successful mixed-use projects in center cities and makes recommendations to complete it. The analysis identifies the critical factors in public/private partnership promoting successful mixed-use projects in center cities. It should be especially useful to professionals in planning and design field in addition to policy makers and developers.

Research and development (R and D) leads to innovation, and innovation leads to technological change. Technological change, in turn, is the primary driver of economic growth. Public/private partnerships -- cooperative relationships among industry, government, and/or universities -- leverage the efficiency of R and D and are thus a critical aspect of a nation's innovation system. This text is intended for upper-level undergraduate and MBA courses such as Economics and Technology, Economics of Innovation, and Economics of Science and Technology, among others. The first chapter introduces the concept of public/private research partnerships along with other concepts fundamental to an understanding of innovation and technology policy. The framework chapters (2-5) set forth an argument for the public's role - government's role - in innovation in general and in public/private partnership in particular. The remaining chapters (6-14) describe a number of public/private partnerships and, to the extent possible, evaluate their social impact.

This innovative new book examines government approaches to Public-private partnership (PPP) formation. An increasingly common method of delivering public services, PPP deployment in these two countries is still in its infancy, beginning only in 2005. Public-Private Partnerships highlights how the governments of Russia and Kazakhstan understand the nature of partnerships, which contextual features drive PPP formation and why these two nations have selected concession as the principal PPP form. The contributors provide comprehensive coverage of the management issues that present challenges in PPP delivery, including partner interaction concerns, opportunistic behaviour and approaches to risk management. The authors also discuss the legal and regulatory impediments to PPP development and the PPP critical success factors.

Provision of quality infrastructure services at reasonable cost, is a necessary condition for achieving sustained economic growth. Investments in infrastructure involves high risk, low return, huge investment, high incremental capital output ratio, long payback periods and superior technology. Today Government is moving from its traditional role of provider of services to facilitator and regulator of services. This has given way for public private partnership models. The success of the government's attempt at infrastructure development critically depends on the success of Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) projects. The study would be useful to the government, developers, financial institutions and contractors in understanding the critical success factors and critical risk factors to be taken into consideration so that the scarce resources are optimally utilised for the successful completion of the project. It will also help the implementers to understand the perception of the users towards the PPP road project and towards paying toll, so that they can evolve better mechanisms for generating future revenues.
